Mount Sindoro Via Kledung: How to go there, Cost, and Trails

For many reasons, the hiking of Mount Sindoro is popular among hikers, especially through Kledung trails. And I will explain why it’s getting so popular. If this is your first time visiting this mountain, I suggest you read until the end of this article.

Mount Sindoro is one of the active volcanoes in Indonesia. A beautiful mountain at an altitude of 10,299 ft or 3,150 m above sea level. This mountain is located between the western part of Temanggung and the east of Wonosobo districts.

This mountain is known as a twin mountain with Mount Sumbing because of its proximity. Similar to Mount Sumbing, it’s hard to find water sources in mount Sindoro. Therefore, I suggest you prepare sufficient water supplies.

Travelers can reach Mount Sindoro from several directions, from Magelang, Banjarnegara, Candiroto or Melayu, and Purworejo.

Every 1 Suro(Javanese and Islamic calendars), many residents climb to the top of Mount Sindoro to perform a salvation ceremony to commemorate the New Year.

Mount Sindoro Hiking Trails

Located in the middle of Java Island, Sindoro has many climbing options. Travelers can hike Mount Sindoro through several hiking trails below:

  • Hiking trail Via Kledung
  • Si Katok / Si Gedang Tambi
  • Bansari
  • Alang-Alang Sewu

Although it can be reached through several different routes, the favorite among travelers is the hiking trail via Kledung.

Kledung is a village located in Temanggung Regency, Central Java. This route is favored because Kledung Village can be accessed easily from the main road. The second reason is the hikers will see beautiful and eye-refreshing natural scenery while hiking. The last reason is the existence of a mountain taxi bike(a.k.a ojek) that can take climbers to post 1.5. This ojek is known for its adrenaline-pumping driving style. With the steep and Cobblestone track, the riders will ride the bike as fast as possible. So make sure that you are mentally prepared beforehand.

How to go to Kledung to Hike Mount Sindoro?

When I write this article, conditions in Indonesia were not as good as in the previous year. There are restrictions on entering Indonesian territory, as well as the renewed regulations. And one of them – there are no direct flights to the islands of Indonesia. All flights must pass through Soekarno Hatta International Airport. So I will provide a guide from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to Kledung Village, Temanggung.

1. Jakarta – Wonosobo

The trip can be started from Kalideres Bus Terminal (Closest from the Airport) in West Jakarta to Mendolo Bus Terminal in Wonosobo. The bus cost is between Rp. 150,000 to 200,000 depending on which bus is used. I recommend you book a bus ticket before arriving in Jakarta, so you aren’t gonna run out of it.

2. Wonosobo – Basecamp in Kledung Village, Temanggung

Travelers can use a minibus that will transport them to Kledung Village. The cost they have to pay is around Rp. 30,000 per person.

Nb: Travelers should prepare some additional costs for unexpected things during the trip.

Cost for Hiking Mount Sindoro Via Kledung

When it comes to costs, there isn’t much to spend. Hikers only need to pay for permits, insurance, motorcycle taxis (optional), and logistics. The following is a breakdown of the minimum costs (other than logistics):

  • Simaksi fee (permit to enter conservation area): Rp. 15,000
  • Insurance: Rp. 5,000
  • Ojek: Rp. 25,000

If we assume that the cost for supplies is around Rp. 100,000, then the total is only around Rp. 145,000. Of course, these costs do not include the cost of transportation to Kledung Village. Yeah, I know, it’s just too cheap for hiking a great mountain in Indonesia.

Rest Area/stopping post

There are at least 6 posts on Mount Sindoro via Kledung hikers will encounter. The distance between each post is relatively different, as well as the hiking duration. Here are the several posts that hikers will discover:

1. First post (6233ft)

The first post is a building that functions as a small shop. This post can be reached in approximately 2.5 hours from the Kledung basecamp.

2. Second Post (6,481ft)

Post 2 is a building without walls, which is located on the side of the path. This post is only a temporary resting place, narrow, and there is no water source. The climb time from Pos 1 to Pos 2 is around 2 hours.

3. Third Post (7,710ft)

Post 3 area is a broad plain just above the ridge. This location is often used as a place to stay overnight by climbers. And once again, there is no source of water here. Can be reached from the previous post within 2 – 3 hours.

4. Sunrise Camp (7,949ft)

Sunrise Camp is a less recommended place to set up a tent. The reason is that this area is not too covered with trees, so it is not suitable as a comfortable place to stay overnight. The hikers will reach this post after climbing for 40 minutes from Post 3.

5. Fourth Post (9,311ft)

The climb to this post will be more difficult because the steep roads are getting wider. But Post 4 is suitable as a place to see the sunrise while enjoying the view of Mount Sumbing. Hikers can also see Mount Merbabu and Mount Merapi from this area. Need 2 hours of a climb from the sunrise camp to reach this post.

6. Peak (10,344ft)

In the peak area of Mount Sindoro, there is a crater and many flat places suitable for camping locations. It is in this area that all the grueling trips will pay off. The scenic beauty of Central Java can be enjoyed from the top of Mount Sindoro.

Note: If you want to shorten the climbing duration, climbers can rent a motorcycle taxi service up to post 1.5(located between posts 1 and 2).

Whats on Mount Sindoro via Kledung?

In the peak area of Mount Sindoro, there are many flat grounds for camping locations. If you come to this mountain during the rainy season, you are lucky enough to find puddles around the crater. And fortunately, if you don’t bring enough water, you can use that water for your needs. Even though it tastes a little sour, it is still suitable for cooking.

Unfortunately, there are not so many interesting locations to enjoy, except beautiful views of the mountains of Sumbing, Merbabu, and Merapi.
